Let the Dino Weekend Begin

It's my birthday Monday and the girls at work did some redecorating in my office ... dinosaurs everywhere!

(Notice the Breyer horses ... a black Morgan for Rhu and a dark bay Morgan for Morgie)

They bought me four dinosaur snouts to wear, but I couldn't wear them alone ...
So I recruited some help!

My boss explained the snouts were supposed to go on your nose.
Oh.
That seemed almost normal, so I went back to wearing it on my forehead for the rest of the day.

Absolutely No Work This Week

Temperatures were over 100 degrees all weekend and expected to climb this week, peaking at 107 degrees.  This means absolutely no work for the horses ... we're doing our best to keep them hydrated and shaded.

This abominable heat is one of the zillion reasons we consider moving to Oregon or Hawaii ... wonder how Rhu would look in a lei?
Hmmm. Maybe not.  Another vote for Oregon.

It's Hot. Who Forgot to Turn on the Air Conditioner?

23 minutes - Rhulain, Bill & Wasabi - 1.24 miles

Switched over to the bitless bridle this evening, but had to use the old reins.  Sorry about that Rhu ... I'll get the good reins fixed this weekend. Promise!
We changed up their training today by hopping in the saddles just outside of the gate rather than walking a half mile beside them.  No herd bound issues for either mare!

About 3 minutes in to the ride, my right stirrup fell off. Again. Seriously? Hasn't happened in 8 years but now it's happened twice in a week?!  Couldn't find the buckle, so I rode without the stirrup.

Both mares were feeling good and wanted to move out quicker than a walk, but because it was 90 degrees we kept them slow and steady.  No reason to overheat them.

We did some light sand dune work, faced down horse-flesh-eating-tires, an evil looking recliner someone had dumped, and jackrabbits exploding out from behind bushes.  Neither horse batted an eye.

Both of them had to check out their reflections in the monorail once we got home.  Bunch of divas we've got here.

Speaking of divas, here's my chicken "Pepper" taking a self portrait:
I had the cell phone out and she pecked at the camera button, not once, but twice and took this hilarious selfie.  *Sigh* Chicks, they grow up so quickly now days.  Next she'll want her own phone and a Facebook page.

Blustery Day, Great Ride

30 minutes - Rhulain, Bill & Majesty - 1.14 miles

Heading out for a walk on a blustery day ... Rhu wanted Majesty to know she gets to lead the walks.  So adorable!

So, we walked for half a mile, let them snack, and then we hopped in the saddles and wandered home.  Bill said I never stopped smiling even with the wind blowing like crazy.

We had them trot for the first time in the open desert.  This girl can certainly cover some ground and she's so smooth!  I love that she watches where the other horse is, but doesn't need to be near them.  She's solid going out alone or with others which is a huge bonus!

Note to self: Need to put Rhu back in the bitless bridle rather than the cross under.  She stops better with the bitless.  Also, fix the stirrups ... they're uneven.

When we got back, I untacked her and let her wander around the property.  When I called her, she looked up, turned around, and came right to me.  Hugs!

Storm Clouds Rolling In

25 minutes - Morgan, Bill and Wasabi - 1.02 miles

Had such a good time yesterday, we decided to repeat it today.
Morgan was very clear in letting me know she wanted to go for a walk today ... first one at the gate and shoving others out of the way.  Really Morgie girl?  Some might say your gate manners need work.

Wasabi and Bill took the lead while Morgan and I chatted and hung back.  The clouds were amazing and we discussed the pending rain and how it might affect her food.

We caught up to Bill and the girls let us take silly pictures for a few seconds before they reminded us that snacks were only .2 miles away.

At the half way point, the kids got to snack for a bit.  Bill watched the clouds while Wasabi watched to make sure we weren't coming any closer to her snacks.  Silly girl, dried grass does not look appealing to me in the slightest.

On the way back Morg and I got in front and Wasabi got pissy.

She picked up her pace, passed us, and this is the view I saw for the next half mile ...

Swishy tail, ears pinned, and she would move over to block us trying to pass her.  I had to laugh out loud.  She's quite a character.  As we were feeding the herd the sprinkles started to land on our arms ... made it home just in time!

Walking Wasabi

28 minutes - Morgan, Bill & Wasabi - 1.08 miles

Look who got left at home for the walk today.  Rhulain was NOT happy.

Bill and Wasabi joined us for our walk today.  She seemed a bit tender and a quick look showed the farrier  trimmed her front hooves shorter than usual.  We kept her in the soft sand and she did fine.

Morgan was happy to be going out, but wanted to snack the entire time.  I suppose that's my punishment for not taking her out more often.

She's a funny girl!  Always trying to sniff the phone ... one never knows if today it magically turned carrot flavored.  Oh Morgie, you're adorable.

Hoof Trimming Day

All five got their hooves trimmed early this morning.  Bill and I had a class in town, so we couldn't assist the farrier or take pictures.
Morgie's hoof

I went out to take off their fly masks before hopping in the car and the farrier was working on Rhulain's back hooves.  She yoinked the right rear out of his hand and he darted away from her ... my back was turned so I'm not sure what happened, but he quickly regained the hoof and continued the trim.
Rhulain's hoof

Seems like I need to work on those backs some more.

Wardrobe Malfunctions

23 minutes - Rhulain - 0.71 miles

We left the tack shed looking like this ... bitless bridle, soft eye, and plenty of sunshine.
We walked to the mounting block and I realized Rhu only had one rein.
Um. What?
She'd stepped on the other one and it broke.  Ok.
Changed headstalls and we're off.

About half mile away from the house, my right foot slipped.  When I looked down, the stirrup was dangling upside down from my boot.  I lifted my foot, plopped the stirrup onto the saddle horn and we continued on down the road.

The dog "helped" find the blevins buckle on our property.  Bill made him drop the buckle or I think the dog and I would have ended up wrestling.  Not sure I would have won.
Asked her to step over a small sand dune and come down the other side ... it was filled with dead bushes and dried grasses.  She couldn't see the sand through the debris.

She stood and thought about it, then backed up.  I asked her to circle around and then right back up to the precipice and I sat in the saddle and talked encouragingly.  After the third time, she stepped down and walked through the debris.

I hugged her, praised her, and scratched her neck.  I didn't push her, but I was there for her ... she just needed to think things through and decide it wasn't scary.
Other things I learned from today:
Rhu does NOT want to take a bit.  Lots of head tossing and backing away from the bit.
Rather than fight about it, I used the back up bitless.

She was in a mood to stretch her legs today.
Rather than fight to keep her at a walk, we headed out into the open desert and let her pick her pace and direction.  She settled immediately and we had an enjoyable time.

Rhu rides solo

26 minutes - Rhulain - 1.06 miles

We took our normal walk for half a mile, let her snack on the dried grass, and then hopped in the saddle for the ride back.
She did well, but got nervous when the neighbor's yappy dog came out of the yard.  We faced the dog and stepped forward causing the little dog ran back to it's yard.

Noticed that she responds better to leg cues and gets a bit annoyed if I use the reins first.  We'll work through that.

I asked her to stop near the monorail so I could get proof we rode ... she stood still until asked to move.  That's such a pleasure!

Where's my after ride treat? Don't hold out on me!

I had her open and shut the big metal gate today while I was in the saddle.  She figured out what I was asking rather quickly.  Very excited to see what our future rides will hold!

One horse, two horses, three horses, four

26 minutes - Morgan, Bill & Majesty - 1.04 miles
36 minutes - Rhulain, Bill & Wasabi - 1.12 miles

We got home with plenty of sunshine left so we haltered our two besties and headed out for a one mile walk.  Majesty was in a great mood, but Bill said he was really dragging his feet on the way back.  Perhaps Maj just wanted to stay out longer Bill!

Every picture I tried to take of Majesty had Morgan in the frame ... she makes me laugh.  She's more possessive of my time lately.  That's ok, she's still my bestie.

Caught this picture of Wasabi seeking comfort from Bill.  As soon as she heard the camera, her head came up and she put on an innocent face.  Yeah, we saw you Wasabi and we know you're just a softie a heart.

Bill and the girls ... Wasabi and Rhu

Wasabi was just fine with us walking beside or behind her, but her ears flattened immediately if Rhu and I got ahead of her.  Bill says she'll do well in endurance racing because she is so competitive.

Once I got Rhu's lead rope away from Bill I snapped a few quick pictures of Rhu and I.  She's fun to take for a walk because she's always looking around at the scenery ... it's like she's sightseeing.

The neighbors had put out their trashcan and Rhu startled a bit when she realized it was there.  I leaned on it casually and let her work out the situation.  Within seconds she was stretching her neck to smell it without getting any closer.  After a minute, she decided it wasn't anything to be nervous about and we circled around it and continued walking.

Rhu's hard to get a picture of because she is always so close to me

Most of the time she doesn't care where Wasabi or Bill are, which I think will translate well to long distance riding.  We're comfortable together, either alone or with others.  I really like this mare ... she's so different from Morgie but she suits me quite well.
