Christmas Morning Escape

Bill went out to feed the horses this morning ... only to find them running around the property. Someone (me) did not secure the turn out gate and one of the horses must have pushed their way out.  And of course, where one goes, the others must follow.
Wasabi was glad to be led around with a lead rope and carrot slices

Bill came in the house to tell me about the escapees, so I grabbed the camera and a bag of carrot slices and headed outside.  I announced that Santa brought me exactly what I wanted ... a Morgan!  Bill was not amused.
Look which two were pretending not to see me or the carrots.  Once Sundance figured out I had snacks, she ditched Morgan in a heartbeat

Majesty was the first one to be caught.  Wasabi realized the goat was eating carrots, so she came running over to get a few herself.  Who was the hardest to catch? *sigh* Morgan.  She only came in when she realized everyone else was in their stalls having breakfast and she was all alone.  Needless to say, no carrots for her.

Christmas Eve Ride - 60 degrees outside, in December, really

Wednesday, December 24th  90 minute ride
Rode with Bill and Wasabi, T & Sassy, Krystal & Buddy

"To my mind, nothing compares with the kinship between man and animal you find on the back of a horse." - Ronald Reagan

Wasabi decided to test Bill a bit today.  When he took off her halter to switch to her headstall, she took off running.  Then she realized the yard was fenced and was caught easily.  Bill put the halter back on her and made her work for a while before switching over to the headstall.  I figured it was just Wasabi's way of testing her boundaries.
Bill, T, and Krystal

We headed out the gate and were barely away from the property when we saw two riders in Santa hats on paints coming towards us.  It was T and her friend out exercising horses.  They joined us, but Morgan was very clear that she didn't want anyone near her ... she was pinning her ears and had a mental meltdown if they got too close to her or Wasabi.  I really hate it when she is in heat.

Morgan and I above the gorge ... Bill, T & Krystal riding along amicably

She was just a basket case, and I had to keep running her in circles or up and down hills, and making her work parallel to the group because I didn't trust her with the other horses.  I was exhausted after 20 minutes and not having a very good time.

Wasabi, on the other hand, accepted the two other horses with no issues and alternated between taking the lead and bringing up the rear.  She climbed sand dunes like it was no big deal, and went farther than she ever had under saddle. She was amazing.

Wasabi on the way home ... look how low she was carrying her head ... poor dear was tired!

After 40 minutes, T and her friend broke off and headed towards home.  Bill and I veered off to our normal riding path and Morgan's brain seemed to flip on the "normal" switch and she settled down.  About 20 minutes later, we stopped to give Wasabi a rest because she was drooping.

Morgan had settled down, but was not in the mood for glamour shots

We ambled back at a slower pace, but about 10 minutes away from the house Wasabi started to act up.  She kept touching her nose to her middle area.  From the saddle, I couldn't see anything that might be pinching or causing her pain.  When we got home and Bill removed the saddle he noticed that the back cinch had rubbed a portion of her hair off and the skin looked irritated.  Poor girl!  Bill rubbed some salve on the area and she dropped her head in his arms and practically went to sleep.  She and Bill will do great things together.

While Morgan and I?  Well, we do great things every time she is not in heat!

Ordinary, Average Day

Sunday, December 21st  60 minute ride
Rode with Bill and Majesty

Looks so inviting ... how could we resist?  Well, we couldn't!

Hey, what are you guys doing back there?

Oh, texting. I should have known.

Morgan positions herself for an ear rub

All smiles as we're headed home

And ... our new gate got installed today!

All in all, a great day!

New Reins

Saturday, December 20th  60 minute ride
Rode with Bonnie and Cutty

Hey Morgan, I got you a gift!

Did you bring me a treat?

New reins!  Aren't they wonderful?!

Pffft.

An hour later ...
You look a little tired there Morgie girl.  Maybe next time you won't make fun of me when I bring you a gift.

Seriously, the new reins are incredible!  I love, love, love them!

Went for an hour ride with Bonnie and found a new path that Morg and I should be able to follow on our own.  We were only gone an hour, but we trotted the entire time and Morgan did very well with the pace.  She was, however, riding behind a stud and she was rather a snot about not riding up his bum.

New Headstalls Don't Change Your Horse's Mindset

Sunday, December 14th  35 minute ride
Solo

Morgan got a new headstall because I didn't like the way the other one-eared headstall fit.  I love the buttery soft leather of the new one! Morgan didn't seem to care one way or the other.  What she did care about was not going out for a ride.

Morgan: Are you sure you want to be out here alone?  Gina said there were mountain lions out here.
Me: Morg, Gina lives 10 miles away on the other side of the valley.  We're safe. I promise.

Morgan: Just in case, let me get a last meal in.
Me: Morg, let's get going. Seriously.

Morgan: But, that looks like prime mountain lion hunting ground ahead.
Me: Um, Morgan ... that's exactly the same path we just rode on ... all we did was reverse directions.

Morgan: Did you hear that?  Maybe the mountain lion followed us home!
Me: Mountain lions are scared of jingle bells, which is why you are wearing them.
Morgan: Really?  Why are you grinning like that then?
Morgan: Hurry up with my treats so I can get back to the safety of the herd!
Me: Morgie, I heard they only eat Paints ... you'll be fine.

Who's That Redhead?

Sunday, December 7th  60 minute ride
Rode Sundance, with Bill and Wasabi

Me: Hey Sundance, who's a pretty girl?
Sundance: Oh yeah baby, that's me.

Sundance: We're really going out those gates?  You realize I haven't been off the property in a year, right?
Me: Don't be worried, we'll be fine!

Sundance: Holy crap! What's that noise???!
Me: Calm down, it's a camera. I'll put it away for a while.

It was obvious Sundance hadn't been out in quite some time.  She gave me a hard time a mere two houses away from our place, and then refused to move forward after another two houses.  With reassurance and calm directives, we were able to work through the issues.

Before Morgan, I would have given up when Sundance started acting spooky ... now, I put her to work and then breathed in and out calmly until she moderated her breathing to match mine.

Each time she did what I asked, I praised and rubbed her ... a little positive reinforcements went a long way to calming her down.  With a few more rides she'll be back on track.

What I learned is not to match Sundance & Wasabi.  Sundance and Majesty have the same slow, ambling (more like shambling) walk so they would be a better pair.
Wasabi stepped over that log with enthusiasm!
She might make a jumper yet.

Morgan: You went for a ride without me? Seriously?!

Morgan: Come here, let me sniff you all over to make sure you're ok.
Me: Oh Morgie, I love you.

78 degrees in December. Really.

Saturday, December 6th  80 minute ride
Rode with Bill and Majesty

Majesty: Here we go again Morgan. You up for this?
Morgan: Just try to keep up old man.

Morgan: Hey, Majesty ... think we can sneak in a bite or two?

Majesty: Let's keep moving.
Morgan: Nom nom nom

I find the oddest pictures on the camera sometimes

Goodbye Traveller

Traveller was our first horse and we had to say goodbye to him this morning.  Last night he was laying down and had trouble getting up, but this morning he could no longer stand and take more than a few steps before collapsing.  We called the vet and they came out to the house to see what could be done.

As the vet was talking about options that were available, he mentioned putting Traveller to sleep, and big T started nodding his head.  Guess he knew it was that time as well.  He went peacefully, with his head in Bill's lap.  It was an incredibly sad morning, but I am so very grateful we had the opportunity to be with him at the last moments.

Big T on September 28, 2014

Traveller was rescued from a feedlot auction on November 3, 2007 for $200.00 by Shiloh Horse Rescue.  They estimated his age as 23 years and 11 months at that time.

When we first visited Shiloh Horse Rescue, the owner showed us a few horses that would be appropriate for our skill level.  The moment I put a halter on Traveller, I felt a zing and knew instantly this was the horse for Bill.  On January 19, 2008, Bill adopted this big thoroughbred and they spent the next 6 and half years as partners and friends.
Traveller at Shiloh in November 2007

We owe so much to this horse ... he was a pivot point that changed the course of our lives forever.  Because of him, Bill got over his fear of horses and learned to ride, I got the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a horse, we moved from Las Vegas to our rural town, met a whole new group of friends, Bill got a new career, we bought our first house, and basically changed our entire lifestyle.

Everything we have done since January 2008 has been a direct result of purchasing that big lug nut.  I can't possibly imagine a life without my horses now, and I owe that feeling of being whole to Traveller.

He taught us good things, like how to maintain your seat when your horse makes a 3 foot leap to one side for no apparent reason, or how to keep your feet out from under his gargantuan hooves, and how to fly - he liked to shove me with that big head of his and it would send me flying forward a few feet.  He was the first horse my son ever rode, and the reason my son won't ride at a trot anymore (Trav had the worst trot ever. Seriously, WORST EVER).

He watched over the herd and accepted all the horses that came and went until we were able to settle on our current pack of mismatched horses.  He was always a patient leader and mostly a good sport.

One of my favorite memories was when we turned all six horses out for the first time, and he gave them a "round pen" lesson.  I also loved when he would get wind up his nostrils and would buck and snort like a youngster.

I'm going to miss that old guy.  The yard isn't going to be the same without his booming call whenever a horse trailer pulls up.  Thank you for everything T, I love you.

A Day Filled With Surprises - Or, Rocket Fizz's Wardrobe Malfunctions and Spooktasticness

Sunday, November 30th  70 minute ride
Rode with Bill and Wasabi

So, Bill woke me up this morning and told me the horses were saddled. Wait, what?  He'd woken up early and fed the horses then went out an hour and a half later to groom and tack the horses ... all without waking me up.  Now that's the kind of husband that deserves a trophy for awesomeness!
Surprise!  Two wonderful horses tacked up and waiting to go!  I've got one incredible husband :)

We came across a spot where Wasabi needed to step up about 8". She hesitated a second, but then thrust herself upwards.  When she launched, she farted. I couldn't help it, I started laughing and told Bill she had to use gas propulsion to get up the "embankment."  I started singing "Rocket Man" and Bill changed the words to rocket fizz.  Sadly for her, I think the nickname may stick because she was certainly gassy.

I think Wasabi was trying to say cheese too!

Shortly after that, Bill noticed his cinch was loose.  Perhaps she'd let out enough gas by then. HA!  Bill hopped off, tightened the cinch, and we were on our way again in no time.
Bill giving Wasabi a congratulatory rub ... she's a sucker for neck rubs

After half an hour later, I noticed Wasabi didn't have a curb strap.  I asked Bill about it, and he swore she had one on when we left.  Somehow she'd managed to get the curb strap in her mouth.  He hopped off for a second time, fixed the issue, and we were off again.
Remounting after wardrobe malfunction # 2

About ten minutes later we stopped to chat with a friend when I noticed Wasabi's headstall was only on over one ear. So, Bill hopped off, took off the headstall and was putting it back on when a loud braying from right behind us spooked both horses.  To Wasabi's credit, she stuck near Bill without her headstall on when it would have been easy for her to take off and leave him standing there.

For my part, I was really surprised Morgan spooked.  I can't ever remember her jumping sideways like that before.  She settled quickly and we were soon on the way home, though she did keep a wary eye on that burro for a while.
Morgan keeping an eye on that "wild" burro

We were meandering along creating our own path, when Morgan tucked her tail and shot forward a few steps. Wait, what?  She's never done that before.  Hmmm. Uncharacteristic behavior usually means one thing ... she's coming in to heat.
Two tired mares resting while they are untacked
A quick roll in the sand and they're ready to go for another ride!
Maybe next weekend girls ... tomorrow is a work day

It was a fabulous morning ride! Filled with adventure, new nicknames, wardrobe malfunctions, and spooks ... all kinds of fun!

Just Out Having Some Fun

Saturday, November 29th  70 minute ride
Rode with Bill and Majesty

Guess who decided to join Morgan and I for a ride?

Bill and Majesty!

Wait ... Bill, are you passing us?

Hey!  We're not used to being so far behind! Get back here you two!

Who's out in front again? *Cheese* That's right, Morgie and Me.

This is what happens when I try taking "selfies" with Morgan while in the saddle ... basically, I just get her nose

Morgan's wearing the latest fall fashion ... the dirt saddle.
