Majesty takes me for a whirl

30 minutes - 0.90 miles - Majesty
Got home and asked Majesty if he wanted to go for a ride.  He was slower than slow all the way to the mounting block.  He lowered his head, took a deep breath, and stood so still I thought he'd fallen asleep.  He was absolutely delightful.
We faced down dangerous discarded bumpers, stepped over the fallen log, and then we worked on opening and closing the front gate from the saddle.  Maj has never liked doing that, but with some patience we were able to work through it.  I untacked him and put him in a stall so he could eat dinner in peace and quiet.  I turned around to see Rhulain staring at me.  I gave her some snuggles and headed in feeling fantastic.

Rhu + Bareback + Open Desert = Bliss

53 minutes - 1.7 miles - Rhulain
I was just going to for a walk.  Rhu was in a great mood.  I was in a great mood and I was filled with confidence from last night's ride on Morgan ... so ...

I asked Rhulain to give me a ride.  Bareback.  In a halter.  A half mile from home.
And she did.

Twice I asked her to slow down (trotting hurt my knee too much) and she did quickly and quietly.  We approached the gate and she lined up perfectly for me to open it without dismounting.  Normally we speed up once in the gate, but she just kept moving steadily with perfect headset.

I'm not sure how I ended up with the two most perfect horses on the planet, but I did.  I love them so very much!

Morgan takes me home

39 minutes - 1.53 miles - Morgan
It's been too long since I got snuggle time with my horses.  Both Rhu and Morgan mugged me as soon as I entered the turn out.  Both got scratches and hugs before I headed out for a walk with Morgan.

It was windy and getting dark but Morgie was completely relaxed. She showed some interest in a garbage bag that was in an odd spot, but after a quick sniff, she dismissed it.
I haven't been able to walk with them much because of the pain in my knee. After 1.25 miles, I was in too much pain to continue.  I asked Morgie if she'd carry me home and she stood stock still and carried me home quietly and safely.

She walked up to the gate and moved sideways so I could reach the latch and open the gate.  Then she stepped inside and turned to allow me to shut the gate.  She carried me to the turn out and waited quietly for me to slide off her back and unhalter her.  I was so happy.

This mare has taken care of me for the past five years and boosted my confidence immensely.  Without her, I am positive I wouldn't be riding anymore.  So very thankful for Morg!

Learning about Rhulain

60 minutes, ground work

I wanted to spend some time with Rhulain, so I tossed on a halter and asked her to exit the turn out.  She rushed through the gate, so we worked on where to stand and not to move forward until asked, then progressed to walking calmly through the gate.  It only took three passes before she was executing gate manners perfectly.

Morgan didn't want to be left behind, so I opened the gate and let her wander the property.  Rhu kept an eye on Morgan and one on me.

We started with basics: leading, stopping, turning, and backing. Moved on to lunging in both directions at a walk and trot.  She's got a great stop.  We walked around the yard and whenever we got out of Morgan's sight, Morgie would come trotting to where we were.  Rhu didn't crowd my space, but she did try to walk ahead of me if Morg was around.  Minor corrections and we were fine.

She's got a "So what?" attitude which is great.  Giant tractor tire? So what?  Monorail in the yard?  So what?  Jackrabbits jumping out of bushes?  So what?  The only thing that seemed to hold her attention was the dogs ... not that she seemed scared, but interested.

Ran into a bit of trouble when I tried picking up her hooves. Fronts were no problem, back right was hesitant, but there was no way she was giving up the back left.  Ok. This is not an issue, just an opportunity to get to know her better.  Worked on it for a few minutes and once she gave up all four hooves and let me hold them for 5 seconds each, I moved on to something else.  I'll work on picking up her hooves everyday until it isn't an issue.

She is a little stiff flexing to the left, but very pliable on the right.  Good to know.  She ties off to the trailer like a champ.  There's a few little holes in her training ... could be that the cue was different.  It's certainly fun to figure each other out!

Majesty Tackles the Gate

24 minute ride
Morgan, Bill & Majesty
1.08 miles

I heard a sound behind me and just knew it was Morgan so I snapped a quick picture.  I'm pretty sure she was trying to send me "grab snacks" thoughts with that intense gaze

Once we got back to the house, Bill went to shut the gate.  Majesty wasn't sure about that thing swinging near his face, but he sure tried hard.  Morg and I shut the gate and Bill said "You made that look easy."  Made my day!

Majesty and the horse flesh eating gate

28 minute ride
Morgan, Bill & Majesty
1.83 miles

Bill sent me a text saying if I hurried, there was enough light to catch a ride, but I was already on the way home!  We saddled up our besties and headed out

It's been quite some time since I've seen these two together
February 1st was our last ride with this pair ... 6 weeks seems like forever!

When we got home, Bill went to shut the gate and Majesty decided it was definitely a horse eater.  So Bill took the opportunity to teach him the gate was not a scary object.  Morgan snacked while she watched, of course.

Double my pleasure

23 Minute Walk
Morgan and Reagan
1.01 miles

Clowns to the left of me ...

Jokers to the right ...

Here I am, stuck in the middle with you!

Took both mares out for a walk today ... they behaved really well! Morgan kept "checking" on Reagan, but Reagan was only interested in the snacks.

Reagan needed a refresher on gate etiquette this morning and after 5 passes, she settled down and walked through like a lady.

No complaints ... it was a great way to spend a chilly morning!

My Newest Walking Partner

30 Minutes of Walking, 15 minutes ground work
Distance: 1.18 miles

Took Reagan out for a walk this morning.  Morgan tried to run out the gate and was not happy to be left behind.

Psst, Reagan ... wanna go for a walk with me?
Reagan: Who me?
Me: Yes you cutie!

Awwww, thanks
Reagan and I had good moments and bad ... she needs consistency when being led and she has some head-shy issues.  Looks like lead ropes must have been whipped near her head ... she's very jumpy and worried.  Some quiet talk and lots of rubbing for correct behavior/ positioning helped settle her down. We have a long way to go.

I can still hear my friends. Maybe we should head back.
We will, once you're done snacking.

We had to spend 15 minutes going in and out of the turnout gate and stall gates this morning. She rushes through with no thought as to where I am positioned, which is dangerous.

Made it safely home! Now, where's breakfast?
Coming your highness.

So we worked on standing still until asked to move towards the gate, and then walking (not rushing) through until asked to stop.  Just going to require a little more time to get her used to our rules.  She tries hard and I appreciate the effort.

Ordinary, Average Day

Sunday, December 21st  60 minute ride
Rode with Bill and Majesty

Looks so inviting ... how could we resist?  Well, we couldn't!

Hey, what are you guys doing back there?

Oh, texting. I should have known.

Morgan positions herself for an ear rub

All smiles as we're headed home

And ... our new gate got installed today!

All in all, a great day!

November 12, 2012 - Morgan - 2 Hours

Ditched work early and ran home to join in another trail ride.  Rode Morgan because she needs experience with others.  Bill borrowed Seven.
This time Morg led the pack with Jackie (on Cash) following.  We had to stop three times to let the others catch up.  Morg does not like to stand still. *sigh*

We skipped the backing up obstacle, but did the others.  There was one rather large sand dune that everyone wanted to try, so Morg and I charged the hill.  Made it about 1/4 of the way before we turned back.  Need a breast collar to try something that vertical.  One other horse made it up.  Bill and Seven got 1/2 way up before Seven bogged down.

Morgan and I took off to run while they were playing with the hill.  Came back and this time got in the back of the pack.  Morg spent the rest of the ride basically shoving Seven along, but she walked.  We didn't do well at the "gate" obstacle, but we did better than the time before.  I did manage to get the "gate" closed.

While waiting for the others to go through the gate, I tried to keep Morg standing still.  I noticed her cheek strap was bulging and reached forward to adjust it.  She started spinning in circles as soon as my hand closed on the strap.  Had to let go and sit back in the saddle.

Then we battled about standing still.  When she finally stood, I hopped off and adjusted the strap.  She really fought me and I am ashamed to say I lost patience and gave her a smack to the cheek to get her attention.
I got back in the saddle and rode her in last place the rest of the time.  Twice she's acted out in the same spot.  I suppose she's anxious to get home, but really, we need to work on standing still and stopping again.  She doesn't stop like she used to anymore.  She also wouldn't load - even with a flag or the butt rope.  I think she was mad at me.  I was upset with her too.

Guess I'll be riding Mochie in Saturday's trail ride. Dang it.

November 11, 2012 - Smokem Mochem & Majesty

Smoke got a hoof trim.

Took Mochie on the trail ride by Todd's house.  Did fairly well - little push at first, but didn't crowd the horse in front of her at all.  Kept trying to eat, so had to keep after her for the first half hour.  Then she got tired and slowed down, so I moved her to the back with Bill and Majesty.  After an hour and a half she was walking so slowly I had to ask her to trot to catch up.  Poor girl!  I bet she didn't expect to ride 2 hours that day! :)

Only problem was at the "gate" opening obstacle because the string had flags that were attached.  She tried hard though and kept walking to the rope, but when I lifted it and flags fluttered, she backed away.  Ah well.
Gina sent Bill a text later that said I should get rid of Morgan and keep Smokem.  As if. :)

Majesty was superb, but seemed tired this trip.  He was dragging at the end and we didn't even run any portions of the trail.

Temperatures dropped quickly and we lost the sun while trailer loading.  So cold!  Glad we didn't work them up into a sweat too bad.

Jackie from my work joined us for the ride.  She borrowed Todd's horse Seven.
